Goals

What do you want to be, do and have???
It was less than one year ago and I traveled across the world to Egypt to experience a land and time that began a lifetime ago.Meditating between the paws of the Sphinx at sunrise and entering all the chambers of the Great Pyramid were two of many dreams come true.
In two weeks I leave for yet another such experience. Only this time it will be to Peru.I will fly to Lima, then Cusco for more dreams to come true. To visit sacred temples, experience powerful ceremonies with local people and to visit what is known as the City of Light, Machu Picchu. I feel honored to make this trip and expect many experiences during this adventure including the physical opportunity to climb Huayna Picchu to see the temple in the sky.
Why am I sharing this with you? Because it is all part of seeing my dreams, my goals become a reality. It was 14 years ago that I sat in an audience, arms folded and repeating in my mind, “I do not do goals. You can’t make me write them down.”I was to say the least, resistant. During the following week I was reviewing the training and I realized that I do goals.I have “to do” lists everywhere for trips I am planning, household activities, and renovations. I do believe in goals. As I looked at some of those lists, I saw that I had made the list, check off the things I had completed and had a plan to complete the rest, and I noticed I had added to the list as well.
I clearly did believe in goals and realized if they work for the little things in life, what could happen if I focused on the big goals in life.
I began making lists of things I wanted big and small. Things I want to BE, DO, and HAVE. What do I want to be, feel, experience, practice, become? What do I want to do, where do I want go, what do I want to see, play, what are my dreams? What do I want to have, own, lease, where do I want to live, drive, what treasures do I want to have?
If you could see what my past 14 years has brought me in adventure, relationships and freedom you would appreciate the value of taking the time to make this important list of goals. You can not get to where you want to be if you do not know where that is. If you do not make your own plan you will end up being part of someone else’s. This is your life; make your goals, not goals of someone else. It is your journey.Take it. Design it as you wish it to be.
Will making the list guarantee you will achieve the goals? There is a chance a couple will fall in front of you but you must always take action. Even to collect on the ones that fall in front of you ... only action will allow you to truly own them. So the second part to goal setting is acting in congruence with attaining the goals. You have achieved today based on your actions and goals of the past. You are in control of your future to the biggest degree anyone has control of anything. Increase the odds by setting goals and acting in a manner that your goals can become a reality. You deserve them... do the exercise below and begin your future ... NOW!
Exercise;
Get a blank notebook and pen.
Find a quiet inspirational and comfortable place and begin asking yourself the question “What do I want to be? What else? What else?” Ask some of the questions above and just keep writing.Let all the small goals and big goals flow through you and out the tip of the pen. When you get stumped ask again, “What do I want to be?
When you have exhausted all of your thoughts ask the question “What do I want to do? What else? What else?
And finally what do I want to have? Keep asking ... keep writing.
Review your goals regularly,put a “V” for victory on the margin of each accomplishment and add to your list often. It is your friend and will show you the results of your dreams and actions as you review
Nothing is too big, too small, too ridiculous or too basic. Remember you are creating your journey... your amazing life.
Stay tuned for future notes. I can not wait to show you some pictures and tell you a little of my experience in my upcoming trip to Peru. This is one of my goals realized. It is exciting to celebrate my choices and actions with a goal accomplished. What will you celebrate?
